The continent of Africa is hugely diversified pertaining to its 54 countries and 63 political territories. The essence of the African continent is its high-spirited people. The total area of Africa is 30,368, 609 square km that comprises of the connected islands also. While the Nile is the largest river of Africa, the biggest lake is Victoria Lake. On the other hand, Mount Kilimanjaro is the most prominent mountain of the continent.
The Mediterranean Sea segregates the continent from the Europe and the Red Sea from the Asian mainland. Towards the northeastern side, the continent is connected to Asia through the Isthmus of the Suez (cut transversely by the Suez Canal). The east of the Canal, Sinai Peninsula (Egypt) is believed to be a region of the continent Africa geographically.
The climate of Africa is largely tropical than any other continent. It is the single continent, which is in equivocal position with the equator. This is why Africa comprises of the characters of Capricorn and Cancer tropical both. The climate in the north equator region of Africa is same as the south equator region. The only difference is the structure configuration of the north of the country is smaller than the southern half, which leads to the colder climate in the southern section. This is the reason why north portion has the biggest desert known as Sahara desert, while the south part of the continent has the smaller desert known as Kalahari. As per many discoveries by the scientists, the climate of the continent has never been the same. It is said that the Sahara desert used to be more humid than today along with many other regions of Africa.
Overall, the most important climatic element in the continent is rain and the winds are the missing element in most of the regions. Because of the placement of the Africa in relation to the equator, the climate of the regions is quite hot.
